In the spring, I donated a session to Seasons Centre for Grieving Children Tender Hearts Gala auction. Since 1995, Seasons Centre for Grieving Children has been providing support for children who are grieving the death or life threatening illness of an immediate family member. The Centre is founded on the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment.
I feel especially connected to this charity’s vision. The summer before I turned 10, my dad died suddenly. One month after his accident, I was sitting at a brand new desk, my first day in grade 5. All the boys and girls were chattering about the fun they’d had on their summer vacations. I looked the same as they did, in my fresh, back-to-school clothes but I was an outsider. The ball had come out of nowhere before slamming me in the stomach and now I’d been kicked out of the circle, unsure if I’d get to play again. They talked and laughed, scraping their chairs, shifting in their seats before the morning announcements came on. As the teacher passed by me, I felt her hand on my shoulder, just for a second or two. She cared, even as the rest of the world carried on without me. Season’s Centre is a caring hand. They are not funded by the government. Please consider donating.
Thank you, Meg, for contacting me in the first place, for your winning bid, and your trust in me to photograph your own beautiful, newly-grown circle. xo
